Ottawa Model Smoking Cessation

In January 2011, the Kingston Family Health Team (KFHT) partnered with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to bring their Smoking Cessation Model (OMSC) to our patients. This treatment model has been developed and tested over the last five years to incorporate the best scientific knowledge and most effective practices in the world. We are very pleased by the enthusiastic response of our patients to this program.
We adopted this program because:
- it offers follow-up support through the OMSC phone contact system
- it allows us to work with all patients who need it to support and encourage their health improvement efforts
- it focuses our time and effort into a proven process
- it allows us to address the most important preventable cause of morbidity and mortality
This is not a brief program effort but an ongoing practice change at the KFHT. We intend to work with all smokers to help them make a decision to quit, to support their effort as fully as we can, to monitor their progress over time and to offer continued help for anyone who relapses.
